Location

The Anderson Center for the Performing Arts is situated on the main campus of Binghamton University, in Vestal, N.Y. The first-class arts facility opened its doors to the public back in 1985.

What you need to know about the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts

The multiple theaters in Anderson Center are devised to cater to the needs of every performing group - chamber ensembles, soloists, symphonies, dance, or large theatrical assemblies accompanied by a full-scale orchestra.

The center is housed in the University's Fine Arts facility which provides extra spaces for the academic sectors. This arrangement of small studios and huge theaters provides a versatile setting that is both intimate yet remarkable at the same time, mixing dance, music, drama, and visual arts while serving the academic needs of the University.

The light from numerous glass panels that floods the main foyer of Anderson Center evokes the warm red of the external brick walls.

The glass panels form a structure distinct to the Anderson Center - a folding wall at the rear of the large Osterhout Concert Theater. This sliding glass wall unfolds onto a slanted knoll, an extension to the Osterhout Concert Theater. Once the glass wall is retracted, the interior acoustic wall that separates the Osterhout Concert Theater from the lobby area is manually moved to provide the outdoor audience a view of the stage. The curvilinear arrangement of the box office, elevator, and lobby stairways are reflected all over the design.

Majestic whirls of dangled acoustical clouds cover the ceiling, accompanied by the splendid curve of interior seating below. With the capacity of 1200, the theater showcases a stylish ambiance. The arched walls in progressively darker tones of gray attract the eye of the audience to the stage and the vibrant terra cotta velour of the curtain.

The theaters at Anderson Center for the Performing Arts

Osterhout Concert Theater

The theater can accommodate an audience of 1170 which is a broad fan-shaped hall with sloped rows of comfortable seating and excellent sightlines.

A folding wall at the back of the auditorium allows it to unlock into an open-air amphitheater during the summer. The massive stage can be expanded by a lift, which at the deepest level, operates as an orchestra pit that can accommodate up to 80 musicians.

The dynamic design with curved acoustical clouds paralleling the curvature of the rows of seats enhances all events on the multi-purpose stage. The theater is also equipped with an infrared hearing assistance system and is handicap-accessible.

Chamber Hall

With its traditional design, the Chamber Hall is a scaled-down version of the Osterhout Concert Theater that can accommodate up to 408 audiences. Its smaller scale makes it ideal for lectures and meetings as well as plays and recitals. The theater is equipped with an infrared hearing assistance system and handicap-accessible.

Watters Theater

The Watters Theater is located at the East end of the Anderson Center complex. It can accommodate up to 558 guests. The spacious, comfortable seating provides great sightlines. The wood-paneled walls help provide a warm and energizing atmosphere. The theater is handicap-accessible.
